Automatic Item Renewals

With automatic renewals, the Library system finds eligible items for renewal on your account and renews them for up to two additional loan periods. Eligible items will automatically renew three days before their due date. Please note: the following items are ineligible for automatic renewals.
  • Items that have been renewed twice
  • LINK+ materials from other libraries
  • Lucky Day items
  • Items on hold for another patron

Manual Item Renewals

You may manually renew your items up to two additional loan periods by doing one of the following: You will not be able to manually renew an item if:
  • The item is in the Lucky Day collection
  • The item is on hold for another borrower
  • The item has been recently checked out
  • The item is 10 or more days overdue or fines exceed $20.00

Renew Your Card

Your Library card remains active for four (4) years. Upon expiration, it may be renewed by verifying your account information.
  1. Renew your library card online with link.
  2. Renew over the phone by calling (925) 931-3400, option 2.
  3. Submit renewal requests by email. Please include your Full name, Library Card Number, Current Address and Phone Number.
  4. Visit the Library in person to renew your membership.

Replacement Cards

Replacement Cards are available free of charge if you have lost or misplaced your card. Bring a photo ID to obtain a replacement card, please visit the Library.

Account Notifications

There are two options for account notifications:
  1. Sign up for email and phone notifications when you register for a Library Card. The system will notify you when your holds are ready-for-pickup, or when your items need to be returned.
  2. Library Elf is an additional free service to create customized account notifications, consolidated lists for you and your and your family’s accounts, receive email and/or text alerts before items are due.

Fees

The Library provides notifications and reminders to help you to keep your account up to date. To be contacted, please keep your email and contact information current. Below are our fees:

  • The Library has contracted with the Unique collection agency to assist in recovering unreturned library materials and unpaid fees. Accounts sent to the collection agency will have a non-refundable $10 service charge added to the balance. Charges for lost or damaged items include both the replacement cost and a $5 processing fee.
  • Borrowing privileges are suspended for overdue items, billed items, or fees totaling $20 or more.
  • Purchasing a replacement item to eliminate the lost/damage fee is not an available option due to the cataloging processes in place with our vendors.

Third-Party Vendor Privacy Policies

The Library licenses services and content from third-party vendors, each with its own privacy policies and confidentiality practices.  

When you leave the Library’s website, your interactions with these services are governed by their respective privacy policies. To understand how your data is collected, stored, and used, visit the links to the privacy statements of the specific vendors listed below.

The Library uses BiblioCore, a catalog platform by BiblioCommons, which manages user accounts and personal data. While the Library supports account updates and syncs basic info, BiblioCommons handles data independently under its own privacy policies. 

The Library uses Polaris, provided by Innovative Interfaces (Clarivate), to manage accounts, borrowing, and catalog activity. The Library oversees data retention, PIN issues, and opt-in email notifications through BiblioCommons. 

Library Elf is an optional, third-party tool that helps users track holds and due dates across multiple cards. Users provide their own account information, and the Library does not manage or control Elf’s data practices. 

An educational platform offering activities for children aged 2-8, in reading, math, science, and art. ABCmouse collects personal information from users, including children, to provide and improve its services.  

An online retailer providing books, electronics, and other goods. OverDrive eBook library users with Kindle devices are required to have an Amazon account, as digital titles are transferred and stored with Amazon. The Library does not control how Amazon collects, stores, or shares this data.  

A genealogy research tool that provides access to a vast collection of historical records and family trees to help users trace their lineage. Ancestry collects personal information to offer personalized experiences and may share data with third parties. 

A reference and marketing database offering details on businesses and residents, useful for job seekers, entrepreneurs, and researchers. AtoZ Databases collects user information to provide access and may use it for internal purposes.  

A provider of library technology solutions, including self-service kiosks, enhancing the borrowing experience. Bibliotheca collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with libraries and partners.  

A language-learning platform offering interactive audio lessons in numerous languages, designed to build conversational skills effectively. Bluebird Languages collects personal information to customize learning experiences.  

An online tutoring service providing live academic assistance, writing feedback, and study tools for students of all ages. Brainfuse collects personal information to provide tutoring services and may share data with educational institutions.  

A program offering library cardholders free or discounted passes to museums, science centers, and other cultural attractions. Discover & Go collects personal information to manage reservations and may share data with participating venues.  

A regional newspaper covering news, sports, and events in the East Bay area, keeping the community informed on local developments. East Bay Times collects personal information for subscription management and may share data with affiliates.  

A provider of research databases, e-journals, magazine subscriptions, and eBooks, supporting academic and public library research needs. EBSCO collects personal information to provide access to its databases and may share data with affiliated institutions.  

A general knowledge encyclopedia offering articles, biographies, and multimedia content across a range of subjects. Encyclopedia Britannica collects personal information for account management and may share data with partners.  

A technology solution used in libraries for computer and print management, facilitating public access to computers and printing services. Envisionware collects personal information to manage library services and may share data with the affiliated library.  

A digital magazine service that allows users to browse and read popular magazines online or via an app. Flipster collects personal information to provide access to digital magazines and may share data with libraries.  

A database specializing in military records, providing access to documents, photos, and personal stories of those who served in the armed forces. Fold3 collects personal information to provide access to its records 

A collection of research databases offering authoritative content across various disciplines, including history, science, and literature. Gale collects personal information for editorial purposes and may include such data in their products and services.  

A genealogical research database providing access to U.S. census records, family histories, and other historical documents. Heritage Quest is powered by ProQuest, which collects personal information to provide access to its services and may share data with affiliated institutions. 

A digital media service offering movies, TV shows, music, eBooks, audiobooks, and comics for streaming or download. Hoopla collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with content providers and partners.  

A streaming service providing access to a diverse collection of films, documentaries, and educational videos. Kanopy collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with content providers and partners. 

An online resource offering test preparation materials, skill-building courses, and career development tools. Learning Express collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with affiliated institutions.  

A daily newspaper serving the San Francisco Bay Area, covering local, national, and international news. Mercury News collects personal information for subscription management and may share data with affiliates.  

A global newspaper with news coverage and analysis on a wide array of topics. The New York Times collects personal information for subscription management and may share data with affiliates.  

An online database providing access to newspapers, newswires, and other news sources from around the world. NewsBank collects personal information to provide access to its services and may share data with affiliated institutions.  

A digital platform offering books, videos, and tutorials on technology and business topics for professional development. O’Reilly collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with affiliates and partners.  

A digital distributor of eBooks, audiobooks, and videos, accessible via the Libby app. OverDrive provides access to the Library’s digital collection, including eBooks and audiobooks. Library members access OverDrive using their library card credentials, but the Library does not store or manage detailed activity records within OverDrive. While OverDrive collects usage data, the Library does not track individual reading history beyond checkouts visible in the member’s library account.  

A service that offers patron authentication and library card registration solutions, enhancing user access to library resources. Quipu collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with affiliated libraries.  

An digital platform with access to popular newspapers and magazines. PressReader collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with publishers and partners.  

A language-learning platform offering courses in over 150 languages, including interactive lessons and pronunciation analysis. Pronunciator collects personal information to customize learning experiences and may share data with affiliated institutions.  

A comprehensive treasury of American genealogical sources, rich in unique primary sources, local and family histories, and finding aids. ProQuest collects personal information to provide access to its services and may share data with affiliated institutions.  

A free website that helps adults learn English and prepare for U.S. citizenship through engaging multimedia lessons. USA Learns collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with educational partners.  

An investment research platform providing data, analysis, and recommendations on stocks, mutual funds, and other securities. 
Value Line collects personal information to manage subscriptions and access, and may share data with affiliates or service providers. 

A source for financial ratings and analysis on banks, credit unions, insurance companies, and investment options. 
Weiss collects user data to offer access to its tools and may share information with service providers. 

An email marketing service that enables users to design and send email campaigns, manage subscriber lists, and analyze campaign performance. 
Mailchimp collects personal information to provide its services and may share data with third-party partners. 

An online survey platform that allows users to create, distribute, and analyze surveys. SurveyMonkey collects personal information to provide and improve its services and may share data with third-party service providers.  

Zendesk Help Desk software manages library user inquiries and support requests submitted to the library’s website. The Library determines what information is collected in support tickets and limits personal data requests to what is necessary for assistance. While Zendesk retains support interactions, the library ensures that inquiries are managed according to internal retention policies of 60 days. 

The Library uses SenSource to track foot traffic without recording video. It operates at Privacy Level Two (maximum privacy) and may be temporarily set to Level Zero (individuals visible, not recorded) for troubleshooting, then reset. Maintenance is done outside open hours when possible. 

A web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic, providing insights into user behavior. Google Analytics collects data to analyze website usage and may share aggregated information with third parties.  

Lightweight laptops running Google’s Chrome OS, designed for web-based tasks and integrated with Google services. Google collects personal information to provide and improve its services and may share data with third-party partners.  

Portable devices that provide wireless internet access using T-Mobile’s cellular network, allowing users to connect multiple devices to the internet. 
T-Mobile collects personal information to provide and manage its services and may share data with affiliates and service providers.  

Better Impact platform is used for volunteer registration and scheduling. Volunteers register themselves, and their information, which includes contact information and hours served, and is stored within Better Impact. However, it is only accessible to City staff and retained until the volunteer service is discontinued. Volunteers are encouraged to review Better Impact’s privacy settings to manage their personal data. 

A social media platform that allows users to create profiles, share content, and connect with others. Facebook collects personal information to personalize user experience and may share data with affiliates and advertisers. 

A photo and video-sharing social networking service owned by Facebook, enabling users to share media and interact with others. Instagram collects personal information to enhance user experience and may share data with affiliates and advertisers.  

A short-form video-sharing app that allows users to create and share 15-second videos on various topics. TikTok collects personal information to provide and improve its services and may share data with third-party partners.
