default news item image

The Pleasanton Library’s Adult Literacy Program, Pleasanton Reads, needs patient, caring volunteers to help adults gain English reading, writing, and conversation skills.  Tutors work one-on-one with students; lead small group conversation practice or book clubs; and provide support for citizenship, GED, or HiSET test preparation.

The literacy program provides all books and materials, meeting space, and ongoing training and support for volunteers. The next training event will take place Wednesday, October 23, 2024, 5:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Pleasanton Library located at 400 Old Bernal Ave., Pleasanton. Registration is appreciated but not required, and drop-ins are welcome. No preparation is needed in advance of the training, and prior teaching experience is helpful but not required for a successful and richly rewarding experience.

Volunteers

  • should be aged 18 or older, fluent in American English and familiar with American culture
  • should be able to devote 1-2 hours weekly for at least 6 months
  •  can be innovative—and have fun!
